Keepsake Diaper Cake
This is a keepsake diaper cake. I used 48 disposable diapers, two rolls of thin white ribbon, three large blue flowers, 1 roll of wide blue, green and white ribbon, two leftover invitations to shower, 4 Popsicle sticks and a charm bracelet.
I made this for a friend's baby shower. It was her first child and (obviously) a little boy.
I wanted it for an elegant yet cute center piece.
I started by rolling each individual diaper with the pattern to the center and securing it with ribbon. Once I had all the diapers rolled, I tied them into three groups to make the layers of the cake and again secured them with white ribbon. I had to play with the numbers to get the look right for my accessories. Suggest you do the same.
Once I had the layers secured I stacked them onto a plastic cake tray and used Popsicle sticks inside to hold each layer to the next.
I wrapped each layer of the cake in my wide decorative ribbon, this covered all of the white ribbon securing the diapers. I tucked large blue flowers (with leaves) into each ribbon after cutting down the stems so they were long enough to hold the flower under the ribbon but short enough not to show around the ribbon. I also used the extra thin white ribbon to make full bows around the base of each flower to give some extra detail.
I decorated the top layer by gluing the two left over invitations together and cutting around the image so that the cake coordinated with the rest of the decorations.
Lastly, I made a charm bracelet with blue cat's eye beads and first baby charms and suspended it with diaper pins around the top layer so that it draped under the flower.
It made a lovely centerpiece and gave the new mom a memento she can wear for years to come.
