Baby Girl in Bassinet Cake
My husband made a cake stand out of some materials we had around the house. The bottom was a 10 inch round base and the top tier was a 6 inch. Between the two was a one inch thick wooden pole.
The bottom of the cake was three 10 inch round strawberry cakes with whip cream and real sliced strawberries in between, then it was crumb coated in a whipped cream icing.
The top tier was also strawberry with whip cream icing.
The Mobile on top was covered in fondant with some piping in icing. The stick holding up the stars were covered in ribbon then icing was put on the end to put the fondant stars on. The topper was cut with cookie cutters and painted.
On the bassinet I used rice crispy treat to make the top edge to drape the fondant skirt on. Also, the baby was shaped with rice crispy treat and covered with fondant. After putting the edge on top I then "fan" folded white fondant, then gently pulled it around the cake. If you have cracking, rubbing white icing in them with your finger will cover it up. I then laid in the baby and covered her with a fondant blanket adding a quilted pattern with a sewing tool. Around the outside of the inner bassinet and on the skirt was icing piping. The piping on the skirt was a white design(may not be visible in picture) meant to add texture.
All parts of this cake were edible with exception to the sticks and ribbon used on the mobile.
