Set Up A Fun Food Bar

This is popular at celebrity baby showers!

  • mashed potato bar ~ serve mashed potatoes in martini glasses and have a huge selection of toppings layed out for guests to choose from. Grated cheese, olives, green onions, bacon bits, sour cream and butter! Yum!
  • baked potato bar ~ same as above but may be a little bit easier since all you have to do is bake a big batch of potatoes and let your guests pile on the toppings!
  • taco bar ~ have a variety of taco shells available such as soft and hard flour & corn tortillas, and taco salad bowls. Offer some scrumptious fillings such as chicken, beef, cheese, olives, salsa, refried beans, rice, jalapenos, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, hot sauce and whatever else comes to mind! Serve with a huge bowl of tortilla chips.
  • ice cream bar ~ most expecting moms have a major sweet tooth during their pregnancy, so why not set up an ice cream station full of all the sweet fixins'! Sprinkles, hot fudge, caramel, chopped nuts, cherries, whipped cream, babanas - and maybe even dill pickles to top it off!

baby shower appetizers

How clever, right? We found these genius, individual, 7 layer dip appetizers over at "The Girl Who Ate Everything's" Blog

These perfect baby shower appetizers are so easy to make! Simply set up an assembly line of plastic cups and go down the line adding your layers. Start with bean dip, add some guacamole, a bit of sour cream that has been mixed with taco seasoning, some fresh salsa, grated cheese, and some fresh tomatoes and olives to top it off! Have a big bowl of crispy tortilla chips next to them.

{you can also do this with vegetables and dip - place a tablespoon of dip in the bottom of a clear plastic cup and add carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber wedges, and colorful bell peppers (sticking vertically out of the cup) - when guests pull the veggies out of the cup, they will each have the perfect amount of dip on the end of each one!}

Some of our favorite shops offer the perfect baby shower appetizer accessories! The Asian inspired spoons below are a wonderful way to display bite-sized food!

The following baby shower appetizers and ideas were submitted by one of our readers, Andrea:

Fancy Rice Krispy Treat Rattles: Make the usual recipe on box, but when melting the marshmallows and butter, add 2 tablespoons of white corn syrup (this makes the treats stay more pliable when forming them). After the treats are made, form a tennis ball sized ball, and a golf ball sized ball, put on waxed paper. When you have formed all the balls, stick a long candy sucker stick through one end of the large ball and one end in the smaller ball. To finish off, I use one of the pre-made bows that you can adjust to size on things for the middle, or you can simply tie some ribbon around the middle.

Baby Themed Cheeses: (these make the cutest baby shower appetizers!) I use miniature-sized cookie cutters in the theme of the shower (teddy bears, bottles, rattles, etc.) to cut out different cheeses. Simply slice the cheese no thicker than the cutter, and press cutter down, instant cuteness! Arrange on a platter for added elegance.

Colorful Watermelon Carriage: Make a cut on your watermelon from the middle of the top, down to the middle of the watermelon, then stop. Make second cut from the middle of the side of melon, to the middle of the melon, remove this piece. Hollow out watermelon carefully as you'll want to be able to still serve the pieces. Fill the watermelon with the in-season fruits. Add wheels to your carriage with slices of oranges and pins that have the pearl on the end, such as you use for pinning on corsages. For the expert carvers, before adding the fruit, you can take a small knife and carve scallops to the edges of your carriage. Add a ribbon bow on top for the final touch and you have a very cute centerpiece!
