I made this cake using the party invitation as inspiration for a friend of my sister.
This was a 10 in and 6 in round covered in vanilla buttercream.
I used the stacked method and wooden dowels to secure the tiers. I covered the top tier in fondant but since most people don't like the taste of fondant I tried to keep it to a minimum by not covering the bottom tier.
The night before delivery, I colored fondant to match the invitation colors. Using a printed copy of the invitation scaled to fit the 6 in cake, I used an xacto knife to cut out the lion shape. I used leaf cutters and trimmed to more closely resemble the ones on the invitation. I used circle cutters and cut strips of fondant in various sizes (trying to match the exact pattern on the invitation).
The next morning, I covered the top tier in brown fondant. I then cut a blue fondant ribbon and placed around the bottom of the top tier. I followed the pattern on the invitation for placement of the stripes on the side of the bottom tier and placed the circle cut outs between the stripes and along the top edge.
Finally, I assembled the cutout pieces of the lion and leaves on the top tier. Once the placement was right I used vanilla buttercream to pipe the "mane" on the lion. Then it was delivered to the shower host.
