Storybook Diaper Cake
Our "mom" didn't really want a cutesy themed nursery, so we decided children's story books would be fun to incorporate in a diaper cake.
First, we collected 50 books from various sources. Rummage sales kept the price down. (Using "Goo Gone" on the front of the books removed fingerprints and shined the books up nice, and we choose only books that had a brand new appearance.) Make sure we you buy "like" sizes to fit on each of the 3 tiers.
Next we rolled 110 diapers, securing them with tiny rubber bands used for pony tails (we found these at Dollar Tree.) Then we started playing with the books and diapers to form the layers.
The two bottom layers had books between the diapers standing up. Cardboard readers work best for this layer and the books were all the same size.
The third layer we had several small books stacked up on the inside with diapers around the outside. This layer was fun because when she took the cake apart she discovered the "hidden" books.
The top layer we made was the smallest, so it was solid diapers. We used large books between each layer to support the cake.
Since the cake was so heavy, we did not try to fix the layers together, so our mom could transport it home.
We tied fish line around each layer to hold everything in place then pinned decorative ribbon around to hide the fish line. A simple bow on each layer inserted with a stick pin finished the look. We topped the cake with a teddy bear holding a bib and also tied a couple nuks and baby washcloths to the cake for decoration.
She absolutely loved the "cake" and will have many happy bedtime stories with her newborn son.
