Choose your calculation method below. All three give you the same full results - your due date, pregnancy timeline, key milestones, and your ideal baby shower planning window.
The most common method. Enter the first day of your last menstrual period - your due date is calculated as 280 days (40 weeks) from that date.
Not sure of the exact date? Use the 1st of that month as an estimate.
Most cycles are 28 days. Adjusting this gives a slightly more accurate result.
If you know your approximate conception date - from tracking ovulation or IVF - enter it here. Your due date is calculated as 266 days (38 weeks) from conception.
This is typically about 14 days after the start of your last period for a 28-day cycle.
Already had an ultrasound? Enter today's date and how many weeks and days pregnant your provider told you at the scan.
For example, if your provider said "8 weeks and 3 days," enter 8 weeks and 3 days.
Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each with its own milestones, changes, and things to look forward to. Here is a warm, honest overview of what most mamas experience.
First Trimester - Weeks 1 to 13
The first trimester is the most significant in terms of your baby's development - and often the most challenging for mom. Baby goes from a single cell to a fully formed tiny human with all major organs in place by week 13. You may not look pregnant yet, but so much is already happening.
How you might feelFatigue, nausea (morning sickness that can happen at any time of day), tender breasts, and frequent urination are all very common. Some mamas sail through with minimal symptoms - others find the first trimester genuinely hard. Both are completely normal.
Key appointmentsYour first prenatal visit typically happens between weeks 8 and 10. The first ultrasound (often called the dating scan) usually takes place between weeks 10 and 13, and is when many couples first see their baby's heartbeat - one of the most emotional moments of pregnancy.
Big milestone - Week 13Reaching the end of the first trimester is a major moment. The risk of miscarriage drops significantly after week 12, and many couples choose this week to announce their pregnancy to friends and family.
Second Trimester - Weeks 14 to 27
Most mamas describe the second trimester as the "golden stretch" - energy usually returns, nausea fades, and you start to actually look and feel pregnant. This is also when the baby shower planning sweet spot begins.
How you might feelMore energetic and more like yourself again. You will start showing during this trimester, and somewhere between weeks 18 and 22 most mamas feel their baby move for the first time - called quickening. It often feels like flutters or bubbles at first.
The anatomy scan - Around Week 20This is the detailed ultrasound where the provider checks all of baby's organs and measurements. For many families this is also when they find out whether they are having a boy or a girl - though you can absolutely choose to wait until birth.
Baby shower window opens - Around Week 28 to 32The second half of the second trimester and the early third trimester is the ideal time to host a baby shower. Mama is feeling well, the belly is beautifully visible, and there is still plenty of time before delivery. Most showers happen between 4 and 6 weeks before the due date.
Third Trimester - Weeks 28 to 40+
The home stretch - baby is putting on weight, developing lungs, and getting into position. Mama is getting closer to meeting her little one, and the excitement (and the preparation) is real.
How you might feelMore uncomfortable as baby grows - back pain, swollen feet, difficulty sleeping, and more frequent bathroom trips are all common. Braxton Hicks contractions (practice contractions) often begin. Many mamas also experience a burst of nesting energy, especially in the final weeks.
Full term - Week 39Baby is considered full term at 39 weeks. Weeks 39 to 40 are the most common time for spontaneous labor to begin, though many babies arrive a week or two early or late. A due date is always an estimate - only about 5% of babies are born on their actual due date.
Get the baby shower done before Week 36Most hosts plan the shower to happen no later than 4 to 6 weeks before the due date - which is around weeks 34 to 36. This gives mama time to sort gifts, wash tiny clothes, and set up the nursery before baby arrives. Early babies do happen, and you want the celebration to happen before rather than after!
When to Start Planning the Baby Shower
The due date calculator above gives you your personalized shower window - but here is the full breakdown of the timeline so you know exactly when to do what. Baby shower planning has more moving parts than most people expect, and starting early makes everything easier.
The ideal shower date - 4 to 6 weeks before the due date
Most baby showers happen between 28 and 35 weeks of pregnancy. This puts mama squarely in the comfortable middle of her third trimester - the belly is beautifully visible, energy is still good, and there is plenty of time to sort and wash gifts before baby arrives. Aim for the 30 to 32 week range as your sweet spot.
Start planning 8 to 10 weeks before the shower date
That means if your shower is at week 32, you should start planning around week 22 to 24. The earlier you lock in the venue, the better - especially if you are hoping for a popular restaurant, event space, or backyard on a specific weekend.
Baby Shower Planning Timeline
8 to 10 weeks before the showerConfirm the date with the mom-to-be. Choose the venue, overall theme, and color scheme. Decide on co-hosts if applicable. Begin building the guest list.
6 to 8 weeks before the showerSend invitations - whether digital or printed, this gives guests enough lead time to RSVP, arrange travel if needed, and shop for a gift. Set your RSVP deadline 10 to 14 days before the shower.
4 to 6 weeks before the showerPlan your menu and drinks. Order or begin making decorations. Book any rentals - tables, chairs, linens. Order the cake if using a bakery.
2 to 3 weeks before the showerFollow up on outstanding RSVPs. Finalize food quantities using the food calculator. Confirm any vendors or deliveries. Shop for non-perishable food items and any remaining supplies.
1 week before the showerMake any food that can be prepared ahead (pinwheels, cookie decorating, favor assembly). Gather all decorations and supplies. Confirm the venue setup plan and arrival time.
Day before the showerSet up decorations if venue allows. Prepare all make-ahead food. Charge your camera or phone. Lay out the gift table, game supplies, and raffle setup. Rest up - tomorrow is a celebration!
What if the shower is after the baby arrives?
Sip and see parties - showers held after baby arrives - are increasingly popular, especially for second babies or when a surprise early arrival happens. If your timeline gets compressed, a sip and see is a beautiful alternative. Guests get to meet the baby, the new mama gets to show off her little one, and the celebration is just as meaningful. Most sip and sees happen 4 to 8 weeks after birth when mama and baby are ready for visitors.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a due date calculated?
The most common method is Naegele's Rule - add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period. This assumes a 28-day cycle and ovulation on day 14. If your cycle is longer or shorter, your healthcare provider may adjust the calculation. Due dates calculated from conception date use 266 days (38 weeks) from conception. Ultrasound dating, especially before 14 weeks, is often the most accurate method and may result in a revised due date from your provider.
How accurate is a due date calculator?
Due date calculators give a very good estimate, but only about 5% of babies are born on their actual calculated due date. Most babies arrive within two weeks before or after the due date, and anything from 37 to 42 weeks is considered within the normal range. Your healthcare provider may adjust your due date based on early ultrasound measurements, which are often more accurate than LMP calculations - especially if your cycles are irregular.
When is the best time to have a baby shower?
The sweet spot for a baby shower is between 28 and 35 weeks of pregnancy - ideally around weeks 30 to 32. At this stage mama is comfortable enough to enjoy the celebration, the pregnancy is beautifully visible, and there is still 6 to 10 weeks before the due date to sort gifts and prepare the nursery. Most experienced hosts recommend planning no later than week 34 to 35, since babies occasionally arrive early.
What is the difference between gestational age and fetal age?
Gestational age counts from the first day of your last menstrual period, which is how pregnancy weeks are typically tracked in medical settings. Fetal age (or fertilization age) counts from conception - usually about 2 weeks later. So when your provider says you are 10 weeks pregnant, your baby is technically about 8 weeks old. This calculator uses gestational age, which is the standard used by healthcare providers.
When should I send baby shower invitations?
Send baby shower invitations 4 to 6 weeks before the shower date. This gives guests enough time to RSVP, arrange childcare or travel if needed, and purchase a gift. If guests will be traveling from out of town, send invitations 6 to 8 weeks in advance. Set your RSVP deadline 10 to 14 days before the shower so you have time to finalize food quantities and seating.
Can I have a baby shower after the baby is born?
Absolutely - post-birth celebrations called sip and see parties are increasingly popular, especially for second or third babies. Guests get to meet the baby and the new mama gets to show off her little one. Most sip and sees happen 4 to 8 weeks after birth once mama and baby are ready for visitors and the initial adjustment period has passed. They tend to be more relaxed and informal than traditional showers.
